Paul Nicholls has a strong squad ready to fight on Saturday as he sends five runners to Kempton and Warwick.

Rouge Vif makes his second run for the 12-time champion trainer and moves up in distance to tackle two miles and four furlongs for the first time in the grade 2 Coral Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton.

The eight-year-old, who finished third in the 2020 Arkle when coached by Harry Whittington, faces three tough rivals in Mister Fisher, Defi Du Seuil and Eldorado Allen.

Here are Betfair Ambassador Nicholls’ thoughts on all of his Saturday runners:

Kempton

12:55 p.m. – Milan Bridge

A former Irish pointer, he should have a willful attitude on his debut for us over the hurdles at Lingfield in November, staying strong. He surprised us a little that day because he is more hardworking than flashy at home. He came for this race and hopefully he can make another step forward under a penalty.

14:05 – Bright Red

He is a class hunter at his best and took on many of the top two mile hunters in the country on his debut for us at Cheltenham. He probably needed the run that day and although well beaten in the end he gave Bryony Frost the impression that he would appreciate this up-speed to two and a half miles. We are still learning about Rouge Vif who has a good chance if he has improved since this first race for us.

14:40 – Gelino Bello

He is one of our best rookies, won in style on his hurdles debut at Aintree in October and raced very well finishing second in his last two starts at Cheltenham ahead of the highly rated Irish horse Blazing Khal . I always thought this handicap was a suitable target for Gelino Bello who is progressive, jumps skillfully and has a chance of favorite. Two thousand and five furlongs on a flat track will suit him very well.

Warwick

13:50 – Threeunderthrufive

He’s made a brilliant start to his hunting career, scoring a hat trick in his last three starts. He jumps solid and is fresh now after a nice little break at home after four fairly fast runs. Threeunderthrufive is a solid stayer and can handle any terrain. Great luck.

15:00 – Thanks To You Enki

He won twice over heavy ground obstacles at Auteuil as a four-year-old before joining us this season and being a half-brother to Yala Enki trained as a complete stayer. He continued well when he was fifth behind Bardenstown Lad at Cheltenham in October and looked in command in three crashes at Hereford last time out. It was due to a stupid lack of concentration. Although we haven’t had him for that long, he seems to us to be a die-hard fan who will appreciate the testing conditions he will find at Warwick.

Better luck. Three under five. 1:50 p.m. Warwick. He’s on a roll and looks like he’s got a great chance to complete a four-man clock.

Taffy Thomas: Lightweight jockey died near Newmarket on Wednesday

Chris Bourchier

Lightweight flat jockey Myrddin Lloyd ‘Taffy’ Thomas died in a hospice near his home in Cheveley near Newmarket on Tuesday at the age of 76.

Born in Caernarvon, North Wales, Thomas recorded 878 winners in a career that spanned almost 30 years and included Group 1 triumphs over Absalom in the Vernons Sprint (now Haydock Park) Cup in 1978 and King’s Stand Stakes on Sayf El Arab at Royal Ascot in 1983.

Thomas began his career in 1961 when he was apprenticed to Geoffrey Barling in Newmarket and rode his first Weather Way winner at the now defunct Hurst Park the following year. At the time, he finished second to Paul Cook as an apprentice and was in high demand in handicaps due to his short stature.

His first big win came in the Northumberland Plate on Piaco for Barling five years later and he went on to record further high handicap wins in Cambridgeshire (twice), Stewards’ Cup (twice), Cesarewitch and Lincoln . He was also prolific in group racing and came closest to winning a classic when he teamed up with the Barling-formed Tower Walk to finish second to Right Tack at the 1969 2000 Guineas.

After joining Ryan Jarvis in the 1970s, Thomas struck up a good relationship with posh sprinter Absalom and recorded his best tally of 98 winners in 1977.

His last major winner came on Old Hubert for Alan Bailey in the Chester Cup in 1988 and he retired from the saddle two years later. Thomas rode for Alex Scott and then Ed Dunlop of Gainsborough Stables in Newmarket but hung up his boots in 2006.

His wife Sallie said: “Unfortunately Taffy passed away with his family around him this morning. He had been in hospital since early last month with an infection and was recently transferred to a hospice.

The couple married in 1973 and have twin daughters, Amy and Diana. Reflecting on their time together, Sallie said: “It was quite an adventure. As Taffy was so small, her father first wrote to various coaches asking for apprenticeships and he got his first job with Geoffrey Barling at Primrose Cottage Stables, where QD is now on Newmarket High Street.

She added: “A little later he was attached to Ryan Jarvis and had a very productive time in the 1970s and was in high demand as a lightweight for all the top trainers.

“He rode a lot of big winners and I particularly remember Tower Walk, Absalom and Sayf El Arab were his big wins. He used to ride abroad in the winter but retired in 1990 after which he rode for Ed Dunlop until he had to have knee replacement surgery in 2006. It forced him to give up completely, but he spent a lot of family time after that and still enjoyed his ride.

The son of Ryan Jarvis, current Newmarket manager William, paid tribute. He said: “It’s a very sad day as Taffy rode for my dad for many years and was a really lovely man. He was a talented lightweight jockey and a very popular figure in the weigh-in room where he was the quintessential professional.

1 / ST and the Maryland Jockey Club have partnered with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) to launch The art of racing, a unique art competition to honor the second gem in the Triple Crown series and its impact on Baltimore. Established over four decades ago, the relationship between the Maryland Jockey Club and MICA takes a step forward with this community-wide call for applications for original two-dimensional visual art works that represent the unique elements of thoroughbred horse racing and the legendary Preakness Stakes. .

From today’s launch until the submission deadline of March 1, 2022, artists can submit their entries to www.preakness.com/the-art-of-racing, after which all submissions will be available to the public. From March 2 to 20, visitors to The art of racing can vote for their favorite piece of art. The top 10 voters will then be entered into the finalist category, with the winning piece selected by a renowned jury representing the artistic, business, philanthropic and political communities that allow Park Heights to thrive as the home of Preakness 147.

The winning artist of the inaugural competition will receive a stipend of $ 4,000 and two tickets to Preakness 147 on May 21, 2022. In addition, their work will be reproduced on the Preakness 147 merchandise with the Park Heights Renaissance as the beneficiary of all proceeds from the sale, which will be used to support the activities of the nonprofit in finding affordable housing for families and providing employment opportunities to members of the Park Heights community.

The art of racing is part of the ongoing partnership between 1 / ST and Park Heights Renaissance, which included honoring the late community advocate George E. Mitchell through the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and the George E. Mitchell Park Heights Community Fellowship Grant. The art of racing builds on the legacy of these initiatives by recognizing and honoring individuals who, like Mitchell himself, demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the Park Heights community.

“The visuals behind Preakness Stakes capture the imagination both on race day and throughout the year,” said David Wilson, Director of Marketing, 1 / ST. “The art of racing commemorates and celebrates one of Maryland and the nation’s most iconic sporting events. It also represents the opportunity for a modern visual interpretation of Preakness Stakes as we redefine the sport to connect with a new generation of fans. “

“The Preakness is one of Maryland’s most esteemed public events and this inaugural competition celebrates its significance in a unique way,” said Dr. Leslie King-Hammond, founding director of the Center for Race and Culture at MICA and member by the jury of The art of racing.

There is an illustrious history between MICA and the Preakness Stakes that began in the 1970s when then-MICA professor Raoul Middleman conducted his mural painting classes at Pimlico Racecourse. The seven murals created by Middleman with his students, who live behind the course podium in perpetuity, offer an intimate look at a tradition defined by history and character.

“Raoul Middleman has enriched the lives of his students by giving them the opportunity to experience commercial artistic creation,” said Dr. Tiffany Holmes, Acting Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost of MICA. “The art of racing builds on Professor Middleman’s legacy by commissioning artists from MICA and across Maryland to provide their interpretations of Maryland’s centuries-old tradition of thoroughbred racing.

Delta Downs hosted the $ 75,000 Orleans Stakes on Friday afternoon and the winner was a very popular fan pick as P. Dale Ladner’s 3-5 betting favorite Cilla came back to jockey Thomas Pompell . The California Chrome girl returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since winning the Prioress Stakes Grade 2 at Saratoga Racecourse in September.

Coming out of post eight in a field of nine, Cilla followed the initial pace set by Icy Charlie, who clocked fractional times of 22.54 seconds for the first quarter mile and 46.01 for the half. As they turned towards the house, Cilla hired Icy Charlie who didn’t easily give in to the stretch. The pair battled for a few strides before Cilla gained the upper hand and clinched a 2 3/4 victory over an Icy Charlie game, while Onerollofthedice settled for third place, another half-length behind the finalist.

Cilla covered the five-stadium distance from Orleans in 58.40 seconds. Each race on the Friday schedule was a fast track competition under sunny skies.

Cilla’s victory marked the sixth of his 13-race career. She earned $ 45,000 for this effort and now has a career bankroll of $ 416,000.

Raised in Louisiana by Ladner and her trainer Brett Brinkman, Cilla is a 4 year old bay girl from California Chrome, from the in evil mare Sittin Au Bar.

Fans who bet on Cilla collected payouts of $ 3.20 to win, $ 2.40 to place, and $ 2.20 to show. Icy Charlie was worth $ 4.80 to place and $ 3.40 to show. Onerollofthedice returned $ 7 to show.

Delta Downs will close its racing week on Saturday afternoon with another nine-race schedule starting at 12:55 pm. Headlining will be the $ 75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes for older horses sprinting five stages.

A double bumper winner, MAYHEM MYA well trained in an event listed on her hurdles debut at Haydock 18 days ago, usually taking a strong hold, but seems sure she has learned a lot for this first experience, so she is looking at the way forward with her sights very lowered here. Phillapa Sue, a solid second behind a useful prospect at Lingfield four weeks ago, should have more to offer and is the most feared, ahead of Good Look Charm.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Templar had lost a lot of weight in the weights and put everything in place late to take advantage of a reduced rating and end a losing run at Warwick on New Years Eve. It was also an outright victory, seeming well suited by a steady pace and test conditions, and it should again have conditions in its favor here. He looks good in place under a 7-pound penalty and will prove hard to beat if he’s in the same form. Another scorer of the last timeout, Kingston King, assesses the main threat.

wicked west won his first two starts for Dr Richard Newland and left his previous efforts in handicaps well behind when he was third on heavy ground at Lingfield last month. It feels like a weaker run and he should be competitive once again if he relies on a 1 pound lower rating. The pair of Sabbathical and Howdyalike, formed by Evan Williams, are now looking at the main dangers and can chase the selection at home.

STUDY SHAPE IN STYLE

  • DISCOVER OUR SNAZZY RACE CARDS FOR EACH RACE, EVERY DAY

Gustavian is a three-time winner in hurdles (all on heavy ground) and he is well worth another chance in the fence. He trained well when he finished third in a decent event on his debut in this field, but failed to clear the first fence in Exeter on New Years Day, knocking down his rider as a result of a blunder. He jumped well in his early days and is capable of much better. Nicky Henderson’s Emir Sacree has run two sonic races this season and should have his say as well.

Getarme got off to a winning start over the hurdles last season and came back on track in a first language tie when he finished second at Exeter on Saturday. She was not up to the winner, but was shaped like a stayer, so the extra distance she faces today will be right on her street, and she is capable of winning races from that mark in what is a much lower stroke. Fashion’s Model can improve now from a low handicap level and is the second choice.

The six-year-old Peter Bowen made his fencing winning debut in style over the course and distance in November, relishing the emphasis on endurance on the trip, and he should have even more to offer in this domain now. The conditions will again be in Fairlawn flyer’s favor and it’s supposed to challenge a higher rating of 7 lbs. Alkopop should also have more to offer on the fences, assuming he’s not bad for his late fall from Wetherby, and he’s the most feared.

The Venetia Williams rider trained well in Exeter for the first time and the conditions which undermine the endurance that this track offers should play on his strengths, so Legend Hunter has excellent claims to open his account on the second attempt. Jean Bart is appealing on paper, so he’s seen as a danger on his debut, while Bamford Edge should show a bit more with experience.

Constitution Hill (right): Could face Might I again at Tolworth on Saturday

By Jack Haynes

Second supreme favorite, Constitution Hill, could face up to eight rivals in his second start as he lines up for the Unibet Tolworth Novices hurdle (2.25) at Sandown on Saturday.

The Nicky Henderson-trained five-year-old made a sparkling debut routing a novice obstacle on the course and distance last month, and was made a favorite with the sponsors to follow up in the first year business.

He beat the now-ranked 135 Might I by 14 lengths that day and the Harry Fry-trained rookie could stand up against it, with his teammate Metier winning that race last season.

Other potential rivals include Mr Glass, who is unbeaten in two hurdles starts this quarter for Paul Nicholls, and the much-loved Shallwehaveonemore for Gary Moore.

It could be a big day for manager Ryan Potter, who entered Jetoile, an easy winner at Chepstow and Leicester in his last two starts, in the £ 70,000 contest.

Constitution Hill, owned by Michael Buckley, is a 4-1 second overall favorite for the Supreme behind 9-4 favorite and teammate Jonbon. He also has a 12-1 chance for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.

On the Sandown undercard, Shark Hanlon-trained Skyace and Willie Mullins-trained Gauloise, one-two in a Grade 1 Fairyhouse in April, could face off once again in the Listed Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Mares’ Hurdle ( 12.40).

Martello Sky, coached by Lucy Wadham, could lead the challenge at home, with the Whitehotchillifili trained by Harry Fry bidding for back-to-back wins in the 2m4f competition.

The 2021 Veterans Pursuit Series finale (3.00) features several familiar names, including Aso, Final Nudge, and Potters Corner.

Today’s tips are in Cheltenham and Musselburgh.

There are five bets for today’s races at Musselburgh and Cheltenham, and I hope 2022 starts off better than 2021 has ended!

Musselburgh tip

13:40 – 2m4f Betway Hair Of The Dog Handicap Hurdle (Class 3)

GEROMINO (NAP – winning bet 1 point to 3/1) can provide another Musselburgh winner for top trainer Donald McCain and Edinburgh’s top track jockey Brian Hughes. Hughes gets back on board the fit six-year-old, who comes here after three straight wins in October-November and a close second on his last visit three weeks ago. This latest race came in an upper class at Doncaster and saw him stand out from the rest of the field and just ¾ length behind favorite Tommy’s Oscar, who won his third Class 2 competition of the year. Connections wouldn’t want the ground to loosen up much for their progressive hurdler (his best form is good / good to soft), but another big run is expected. The choice of the stoner, sent on the long journey north from the Fergal O’Brien shipyard, is the greatest danger.

Tips for Cheltenham

14:00 – 2m4½f New Years Paddy Power Handicap Chase (3rd year)

Perhaps the most exciting runner in the roster is FUNAMBULE SIVOLA (winning bet 1 point at 7/1), who chased Shishkin home at Aintree in April and recently returned to action with a second place finish in the Category 2 Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon. As a result, he will have to challenge the highest weight to win this competitive handicap, but he holds a Category 1 entry and looks like a very classy prospect. This will be his first visit to Cheltenham, but provided he adapts to it, he is set to compete in a great race under the guidance of regular jockey Charlie Deutsch.

Things didn’t quite go as planned SIMPLY THE BETTS (bet winning 1 point at 10/1) since switching to Paul Nicholls, but it would be a surprise if his new coach couldn’t win soon. He is a double winner on the course and the distance today and should be well adapted by the retreat of the course after finding 3m1f too far away at Aintree last time around. The soft ground is ideal, he is not handicapped on 153 and Harry Cobden takes over in the saddle.

14:35 – 3m Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

TAMAR BRIDGE (winning bet 1 point at 11/2) had a strong start to his career and followed up his bumper victory with a novice hurdles success at Ayr in March before a 13-length victory at Wetherby in his seasonal reappearance in October. Olly Murphy’s unexposed hurdler then made his class 2 handicap debut at Aintree in December and only increased 6 pounds for that. After holding up well after two and a half miles, he should relish the climb and will have no problem with the conditions underfoot as he has already won twice on the proving ground. It looks like a good opportunity for him to take his record to 4-5 over hurdles.

The one who could exceed his great chances is PLACE DES DAUPHIN (winning bet of 0.5 point at 25/1), who comes here in form with recent figures of 1221. He seems to have enjoyed returning to hurdles and his last success came in a Class 2 at Newbury in November. He weighs 5 pounds heavier today, but three miles on loose soil seems to be his optimum. Trainer Philip Hobbs has his riders in good shape and David Maxwell (claiming 3lbs) knows the horse well.

Vanillier, a six-year-old gray gelding, is back in the 3m trip after winning his second jump start. Vanillier thus notes the nap of the day this Wednesday. Find more reasons to support him below …

Why will NAP of the Day Vanillier win?

According to the horse betting site market, Vanillier’s main competitor in this competition comes from two relatively exposed handicappers. He remains little raced by the rules and has only had 10 career starts, including two Irish points. After winning the second of those for Dromahane, Vanillier appreciated the passage to 3m during his fourth hurdle start.

The Albert Bartlett is invariably a race that brings out all kinds of subsequent winners, with the 2021 renewal being no different. Each of the third, fourth and sixth homes has already achieved victory over the fences. Even the 13th house scored twice on the biggest hurdles in the limited handicaps of Chepstow novices, so he paid off to follow that form of Cheltenham.

Cromwell pitched Vanillier in this area after an inadequate trip to Down Royal. He did manage to stay third behind Lifetime Ambition, but it was the Beacon Edge finalist who announced the form. This one did better in the first year Drinmore Novice Chase race. When he went up to 2m 6f for the Florida Pearl Grade 2 at Punchestown the last time, Vanillier bolted 26 lengths.

Going up a distance will certainly suit him as well and remains open to any new progression. Take our NAP of the Day tip and come back to Vanillier with a bet of £ 25 at his current odds of £ 93.75. If he does not call at the highest level, QuinnBet will refund the losing stake as a free bet..

In an exciting duel, Jose Ortiz, aboard Law Professor, managed to beat Kent Desormeaux aboard favorite Beyond Brilliant, winning the $ 200,000 Santa Anita Mathis Mile Stakes on Sunday by a half length. Originally patented on turf, the Mathis Mile was one of six opening day races in Arcadia, Calif., The track has moved down to dirt due to heavy rain over the past five days. As a result, Santa Anita Mathis Mile’s result will be reviewed later this week by the American Graded Stakes Committee, which will determine whether the race will remain a Category 2 for statistical purposes.

Trained by law professor Michael McCarthy, who came out of a five-month refresh to rally and earn a first-condition allowance by running a mile on the turf Nov. 27 at Del Mar, was at 4-1 in a field of nine sophomores and paid $ 10.20, $ 4.60 and $ 3.20.

Owned by Twin Creeks Racing Stables, LLC, the second-rung law professor followed Beyond Brilliant to the far corner and came a quarter-mile closer to home in a hard-earned victory. The law professor, a colt by Constitution, now has three wins out of seven starts and with the winner’s share of $ 120,000 he increased his winnings to $ 226,640.

G1 Hollywood Derby winner in his most recent start, Beyond Brilliant was 7-5 and paid $ 3.20 and $ 2.60 while finishing 8 ½ lengths ahead of Tarantino.

At 8-1 with Juan Hernandez, Tarantino paid $ 5.20 to show.

The fractions on the run were 23.26, 46.65, 1: 10.95 and 1: 23.62.

“I thought he was a lot better than what he showed,” Ortiz said. “When he took the lead he started to wander, he didn’t give me one hundred percent. I think he’s a little better than what he showed today. I was showing my reins to change him and keep his attention. When I did, he responded well, I got his attention and continued to do so on the wire.

“He’s a bit on the hard side,” McCarthy said. “He hasn’t quite got it yet. I thought his last victory at Del Mar was very professional. I was looking forward to running him on the grass today, I also thought about running him on the dirt in Los Alamitos. I thought he had a good break here when he broke his young daughter but he hasn’t got everything in place yet, when he does I think it will be very exciting. It’s great to have a horse as versatile as him, I don’t know yet what that has in store for him, but after what we saw today we can think of giving him a little blinker. We have a lot of options in the game, it’s very exciting.

According to a story written by John Cherwa, as a special contributor to The Los Angeles Times, the California Horse Racing Board’s equine medical director is now “suspected” by another agency in the state of California, the Veterinary Medical Board.

In the story, Cherwa explains in detail how Dr. Jeff Blea – who happens to be in charge of the investigation into the death of Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit – was served with a 27-page “charge”. by the State Veterinary Medical Council. .

This document was served on Blea on December 17 and, according to Cherwa, alleges that the medical director violated several state regulations in the year leading up to his appointment as equine medical director on July 1.

Cherwa writes:

“The investigation began in February after VMB received an anonymous advice that Blea and other vets prescribed and gave medication without examination or medical necessity. Veterinarians Vince Baker and Sarah Graybill Jones have also received complaints. Among the drugs cited in Blea’s complaint was thyroxine, a thyroid hormone supplement that has been controversial for use in horses. CHRB was not aware of VMB’s investigation into Blea.

“The press box” confirmed that an emergency hearing was scheduled for Friday to determine whether Blea’s license should be temporarily suspended. There is nothing in the law that says the California Equine Medical Director must have a veterinary license.

According to Cherwa, Blea declined to comment on the “charges” or the investigation.

Chrewa quotes Scott Chaney, executive director of the California Horse Racing Board:

“I have known and worked with Dr Blea for over 20 years, and during that time I have never met a veterinarian so dedicated to the care of horses,” said Chaney. “From my perspective, he has always displayed high ethical standards. In short, he has dedicated his life to the protection and promotion of animal welfare. I look forward to Dr. Blea continuing to serve CHRB and the horse racing industry during the formal procedural phase of this matter. “

According to Cherwa’s article, the complaint alleges eight grounds for discipline. They are, as stated:

  • Neglect in prescribing, dispensing or administering medication or medication without examining a horse or making a diagnosis. The complaint cites six horses he tended. Horses are not named, but identified by initials. All of the claims involve the same set of horses.
  • Distribution of dangerous drugs without medical necessity involving six horses. Despite the “dangerous” label, most drugs are commonly used, such as Lasix and vitamins.
  • Failure to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship involving three horses. One example listed was performing an endoscopic examination without documenting an examination of the horse or communicating treatment with the trainer or owner.
  • Violation of the Practice Act and Council Regulations regarding record keeping in the case of six horses. He cited a failure to record information such as a horse’s age, sex, breed and color as well as medications, diagnosis and prognosis.
  • Use of mislabelled drugs, in one case involving L-thyroxine powder, which is not FDA approved.
  • Possession or use of prohibited drugs in 10 cases. Five of the cases involve aspirin powder, which is not approved by the FDA for veterinary patients.
  • Failure to provide the required medical consultation in eight cases. He cited cases where the medical file did not mention the consultation required for the use of the drug.
  • Poor record keeping in anesthesia case. The prosecution said the file did not document a required examination 12 hours before the administration of general anesthesia.

Stay tuned. More is sure to come.
