Former Pataskala riding instructor gets 36 months in jail for sex offenses
A former Patakala area riding instructor was found guilty of two sexual offenses by the Licking County Common Plea Court on Friday.
William Sheets, 42, of Gahanna, was convicted of one count of sexual assault, a third degree felony and sexual imposition, a third degree misdemeanor.
According to an indictment filed in Licking County in April, the trainer and horse instructor allegedly had sex with a minor between December 12 and March 18. Licking County Assistant District Attorney Jenny Wells said Sheets was giving the victim, a 14-year-old, riding instructions from her home on Smoke Road.
Two counts of illegal sexual behavior with a minor and one count of sexual violence were dismissed in this case.
Judge David Branstool sentenced Sheets to 36 months in prison for the charges against him. He got five days credit for time spent in jail. Sheets was also ordered to perform 40 hours of community service per month until his legal fees and costs were paid.
Upon release from prison, Sheets must complete five years of post-release community monitoring. He is also required to register as a Level III sex offender, which means he must register with the Sheriff’s Office every 90 days for the rest of his life.
