Tips for today’s horse races: action from Newcastle and Newbury
There are four bets for today’s races at Newbury and Newcastle.
3:00 p.m. – Ladbrokes Trophy Race 3m2f (Handicap) (Grade 3)
FIDDLERONTHEROOOF (bet winning 1 point at 8/1) heated up for that with an impressive Listed victory in his seasonal reappearance at Carlisle last month. This should have put him on the right track for a crack at this prestigious handicap and with entries for both the King George and the Gold Cup, this young pursuer is clearly very appreciated by the connections. Although only one of his seven chases last season resulted in victory, he has finished second or third on every other occasion and has competed in five consecutive Class 1/2 races. His second behind Monkfish’s form at the Cheltenham Festival looks solid and the throwback should suit this winning first-year hurdler.
I also think DEMACHINE (winning bet of 0.5 point at 16/1) can run a great race in his first start since finishing second in a 2nd year novice race at Ascot in February. A double winner last season, this obviously represents a big step forward in the class but he is going very fresh, will love the pitch and would have worked well at home.

Coach Venetia Williams has had a good start to the season and can clinch another winner thanks to FRERO BANBOU (NAP – bet winning 1 point at 9/2). His two runs earlier this year saw him win by a 9-length descent at Sandown before a solid effort placed alongside grade 3 at Aintree. The form of this race looks solid and he returned to action with a fourth place finish at Ascot 28 days ago (sent off as a favorite). He is likely to have come for this reappearance race and can take advantage of this lower class and a lower handicap of 2 pounds. He is generally a good jumper and should be good on the ground.
14:05 – 2m7½f Betfair Exchange Rehearsal Handicap Chase (List)
Conditions are shaping up to be tough for everyone involved in Newcastle, where I think NOTACHANCE (round trip bet of 0.5 point at 12/1) to run well at a double-digit price on its first start for 223 days. He can be forgiven for his two failed efforts at the end of last season as he turned out to have a hoof injury. Before that he looked like a very intelligent young hunter when he won the Classic Handicap Chase at Warwick. Today’s shorter trip won’t be its optimum but it’s usually a good test of endurance and that’s its strength. With three wins and two seconds since his eight pursuit starts so far, there could be many more to come.
