Saturday: Aintree

As the test conditions destroyed many at Aintree on Saturday, Protektorat produced a touch of class to deliver a scintillating performance and win the Many Clouds Chase by 25 lengths.

The Dan Skelton-trained rider handled the acceleration of the course on the Merseyside track with ease and showed no signs of slowing down as he darted under Bridget Andrews.

Native River, who did it all for much of the 3m1f contest, were unable to hold back the eventual winner on their way home as Sam Brown came back a far third as the only other finisher in the race.

Andrews said: “He’s got an incredible amount of talent. We always knew that, but he was passionate in the past and we were just trying to use him properly. That was my only concern today.

“He’s a big, strong horse and I’m not very tall. We galloped reasonably but he has a high cruising speed and all he does is keep going. He was doing half a speed and I couldn’t. not go any slower and in the end I just let it go to the front. “

With Native River and Wishing And Hopeing setting the pace early, Protektorat began to put pressure on the stretch and quickly proved too difficult for his rivals, easily pulling away from the 2019 winner Native River and scoring his credentials in the stay hunting division.

The six-year-old was reduced to 8-1 (up from 25) with Paddy Power for the Ryanair Chase in March, with a possible Cheltenham Gold Cup tilt no doubt in the spirit of relations after the dominant display.

Asked about Protektorat’s potential in the Gold Cup, for which he was cut in 20-1 (from age 50), Andrews added: “There is a possibility that he is on that path.”

Winner of the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices’ Chase on the course in April, the 4-1 shot was second in his seasonal reappearance when he was sent off from the favorite for the Paddy Power Gold Cup last month.

While this November competition was a close affair, Saturday’s performance was anything but, with Skelton’s lead runner in the Category 2 competition taking the win in splendid isolation and Native River finishing 22 lengths ahead of Sam. Brown, third.

Dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll was among the first to wrestle in the grueling conditions of Aintree, before finally being stopped by James Bowen before the tenth close.

Coach Gordon Elliot, who was busy enjoying a spectacular day with seven winners at Navan, said: “The ground had gotten really soft there which wasn’t ideal so we’re where we are. It sure won’t be his last race.”

Tiger Roll was one of four riders entering the race alongside Imperial Aura, Simply The Betts and Wishing And Hopeing.

The Two Amigos, coached by Nicky Martin, were the lone striker on the field, falling to 12th fence after failing to make a good impression throughout the run.
